A personal project of mine has been to move more to coops. One problem I had was not finding a good coop registrar. Apparently somewhere in 2024 on the Francophonian side of fedi some people started one 🎉
It's still very small and very early days, and they aren't actually a registrar yet. Apparently the bar to become a registrar is very, very high. Different TLD's are operated by different registries, each having their own interfaces, each having their own costs and ways they operate, and each having their own requirements for becoming a registrar for their TLD's. And those requirements sometimes contain the requirement to be a member at some other organisation (e.g. ICANN) who then has it's own set of costs and requirements. So the strategy they'll use, is to first be a reseller, and later, when they are big enough to handle the requirements, become a registrar.
One big problem for me is of course that it's all in French 😅
I haven't actually switched because I only learned about it yesterday, but ilja.space expires in september, so maybe I'll take the leap then, we'll see. It's a bit scary bc it's my main domain, and it all being French makes communication harder for me. I do want to support it in a way I can, and hopefully a decade or so from now, we can actually propose a good registrar to people instead of "the least worst one" 😌
Oh, and before I forget :3c, it's https://lebureau.coop/
