the reason for the forgejo fork (and why some moved to it) is because of the gitea controversy that happened in late 2022 where the then-project-owner basically hijacked the project and made some changes oriented at supporting enterprise users.

In short, the project owner creates a company called Gitea Limited that bridges the gap between the Gitea project and enterprises, and ownership of trademarks and such was moved to that new company (first red flag as it shifts control away from the community). Secondly a bunch of that stuff was done without consensus of other maintainers and the larger community (second red flag). Consequently the project owner further tried to hide stuff and basically ignored all the fuss the community was throwing up which further reinforces the idea that the project had been hijacked.
These things don't really have to mean anything bad, but one can speculate about the future of the project given what has happened and that doesn't sound very good. I'm not sure if Forgejo currently is still pulling from the gitea project, but I hope they split off and become a hard fork.
