LXD outs top maintainers

LXD (the linux container daemon thing) recently became stewarded by Canonical rather than the Linux Container group.
That was kind of questionable in and of itself, but now...

You may be familiar with Christian Brauner and Stéphane Graber.
These two have been doing essentially 80% of the maintainership work on LXD.
Neither are now maintainers, it's employee-only.

For context, Graber left canonical literally this month.
The move of LXD to an "in-house" project happened basically right after he announced his resignation.

This is absolutely insane, and I'm fully expecting the software quality of LXD to go down the drain.
Who knows, maybe they were just freeing up space for better in-house maintainers... but somehow I doubt that.

toast I was just considering not using lxc containers any more (the containers turn out to be more trouble than what it's worth for what I'm using them). Good timing I guess.

I find it kinda weird this whole big-enterprise-but-floss thing. I think Canonical brought good things to the world, but the sharing culture of floss seems so opposed to the profit incentives of big corpos. Sooner or later these two worlds just have to clash and I wonder if this is such an example.

toast given canonical's track record for keeping projects alive, I wouldn't be surprised if LXD went the way of the dodo somewhere in the next 5 years. Though more probable would be someone forking it, I assume a lot of people use LXD so it wouldn't be a stretch for several people to get up and take over.

ilja note that lxc and lxd are different things!
LXC is kind of... eh? It's like libvirt or qemu.
LXD is actually kind of good, or, erm, hopefully will remain so for longer than a year.

toast isn't lxd like the thing you use to handle lxc containers because it's too much hassle to do it manually? If they are a completely different thing, then yeah, I was using lxd, not lxc. (installed through snap, another of Caniconals atrocities (this is now a "complain about caniconal" thread))

it's kinda what happened with Gogs/Gitea, right? (it doesn't seem like Forgejo is going to ever take off, either, btw...)

Incus removing a bunch of Canonical garbage (like snap as a distribution system, their weird kernel patches, etc) is honestly interesting, that might make it more popular than before for that single reason

Incus has all of the original LXD team.
. . . so it's closer to feeling like LXD is the fork, in some ways.

I kinda hoped forgejo would go somewhere a bit faster than this. I ditched gitea for gogs but gogs admittedly is kinda meh and I might as well just install cgit or something. Preferably I'd make a setup like I have with fossil where I can just put my repos in my home directory on the server and have them automagically be available to the web.
